What is a TUAPA Dog?

We are very lucky to have a great partnership with an amazing rescue in Taiwan called TUAPA, or Taichung Universal Animal Protection Association. TUAPA is a non-profit organization that is dedicated in helping thousands of homeless animals. The organization currently provides roughly 1000 dogs and several cats, a place to call home.

Animal welfare in Taiwan is a relatively recent concept.  Previously, many pets were left to roam freely, almost like half strays.  Due to these animals having no boundaries and the fact that neutering was not really an option that was widely offered or used; this freedom resulted in a rapid increase in the Taiwan’s stray population.  The combination of the uncontrollable quantity of stray dogs,  the limited amount of information regarding animal welfare and humane preventative measures, resulted in a lack of compassion and understanding regarding these animals.  Stray animals faced the constant danger of car accidents, human abuse and general neglect that comes from living on the streets.  As Taiwan developed, their space for survival was continuously being suppressed.

Aside from providing a last chance shelter for animals that are always being overlooked, TUAPA provides local emerency rescue service and free spay and neuter programs for the feral populations and strays in Taiwan.

TUAPA envisions a community where all animals receive appropriate care at all times, are treated with dignity and respect and protected from all forms of cruelty and neglect. From newspaper articles, adoption functions, booklets, and t-shirts, they are striving to educate the public on the importance of animal welfare and spaying and neutering. TUAPA is possible to operate due to the volunteers and staff who dedicate countless hours each year. As a non-profit organization they rely heavily on the donations from individuals, foundations and coporations, who also have a commitment to animal welfare.
